While sports drinks are good go-to thirst-quenchers after a high-intensity activity, energy drinks on the other hand are definitely not advisable for children.

A new clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics warns that energy drinks, or any other drink with caffeine, should be off-limits to children and teenagers. That includes colas and coffee drinks.

Sports drinks are flavoured beverages often containing carbohydrates, minerals, and electrolytes. On the other hand, energy drinks are stimulants, containing caffeine as the primary energy source, along with other ingredients. 

A sports drink might be appropriate to quickly replenish fluids lost through sweating and exercise, having too much of it can also increase the risks of obesity and tooth decay. Plus, the vitamins and minerals in these drinks, if any, can be easily acquired from a well-balanced diet.

Sports drinks can be helpful for young athletes engaged in prolonged, vigorous physical activities, but in most cases, they are unnecessary on the sports field or the school lunchroom.​

On the other hand, while energy drinks are popular energy boosters for most, the American Academy of Pediatrics strongly advises against it in children’s diets. Excessive amounts of caffeine can cause an imbalance of carbohydrates, fat, and protein intake which can be harmful to their growth, development, body composition, and health. 

According to experts, energy drinks are never appropriate for children or adolescents. In general, caffeine-containing beverages, including soda, should be avoided.

This leads to the conclusion that plain water is always the best during and after exercise! Helping kids avoid unnecessary extra calories from sports and energy drinks. In fact, water should be the primary source of hydration, apart from the recommended intake of juice and low-fat milk during meals.
