WHAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL MOVEMENT SKILLS?

Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) are the building blocks that all children need, not only for everyday life but to participate in all aspects of physical activity and sports. If you would like your child to excel on and off the sports field, it is essential that they develop a strong movement foundation from a young age.

THE THREE MAIN AREAS OF F.M.S.

1. LOCOMOTOR SKILLS

Activities that require the child to move the body while in a stationary position such as: Bending, Stretching, Swinging, Spinning, Twisting

2. NON-LOCOMOTOR SKILLS

Activities that require the child to move the body while in a stationary position such as: Bending, Stretching, Swinging, Spinning, Twisting

3. OBJECT CONTROL SKILLS

Activities that require the child to move the body while in a stationary position such as: Bending, Stretching, Swinging, Spinning, Twisting

BENEFITS OF DEVELOPING F.M.S. FROM A YOUNG AGE

Fundamental movement and sports skills – also called “physical literacy” – help a child learn to move and play sports with confidence and control. There are many benefits to learning movement skills; physical, social, and cognitive. The physical benefits are endless and children will improve their strength, coordination, and flexibility along with developing and learning many key sports skills.

The main social benefits are improved confidence, communication skills, and, sense of achievement. We will be teaching them new movements & techniques that they will have to work at and practice in order to accomplish them! Cognitive benefits are never-ending! Learning to master a new skill takes focus and persistence. You need to figure it out by yourself but also as part of a team!

By introducing your child to lots of different physical activities from a young age, keeping them fun, and practicing fundamental movement skills, you will give them the best chance at succeeding in sports. More importantly, you will set them on the path towards a healthy and active lifestyle later in life.
